Fanes is a part of the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Reserve. The Dolomites have recently been recognised by UNESCO as a site of World Natural Heritage. Not only the beautiful mountains and the nature with the mountain animals (characteristic hillocks, chamois, ...) but also the famous and ancient legend of Fanes enchants the landscape. Two refuges are found at 2,060 metres above sea level: Fanes and Lavarella. Lying between these 2 refuges is a green lake, and according to the legend of Fanes it is clean with drinking water! Continuing on from Fanes you reach the Lake Limo and if desired the Gran Fanes refuge can be reached where you can descend to San Cassiano (Val Badia).
